An ear-oriented multi-sensory event, SoundPedro will be presenting artists whose work addresses sound and aural perception in combination with other senses.

Located a mere 25 miles due south of the major cultural institutions of downtown Los Angeles like MOCA, the Broad, and the new ICA LA and Main Museum, the South Bay community of San Pedro is home to a small but formidable community of artists. At its heart is the Angels Gate Cultural Center, which provides studio space for 52 artists, a range of classes, and several exhibitions a year.

This Saturday, they’ll be hosting the second annual sound art festival, SoundPedro. Organized by local arts organization FLOOD, SoundPedro features almost three dozen multi-sensory and sound artists who will be presenting their auditory works in the picturesque 36-acre Angels Gate Park overlooking the Los Angeles harbor. Highlights include Brian and Ryan, who will be roaming the grounds with their “sound collecting helmets,” creating a sound database for other artists to utilize; SASSAS’s Sound Shoppe, and improvisational noise workshop led by members of the seminal Los Angeles Free Music Society;  and Steven Speciale’s Automaton Bricolage Cogitating, a Fluxus piano with keys nailed down that has been modified with robotics, samples, and contact mics into a new incarnation. The event is free and open to the public.
