Shiseido has revealed that stress has a distinctive scent, according to a report published by Kyodo News, and that scent is green onion.

The Japanese cosmetics manufacturer is planning to commercialize its discovery by producing products capable of neutralizing or eliminating the odor, which it anticipates will hit the market as early as next spring.

The ‘stress smell’ derives from two compounds, allyl mercaptan and dimethyl trisulfide, Shiseido found in a study where it put 40 women through a stressful scenario in order to isolate the scent. The Japanese owner of Cle de Peau is naming the combination of the two ST Thiodimethane.
