Drivers who love their cars can now take their obsession to another level with the launch of a new household fragrance that smells like petrol.

To help out petrolheads who love the smell of fuel but fear that sloshing a can of unleaded around their sitting room is a bit extreme, candle-maker Cosy Owl has included the unusual fragrance oil in its product line for 2020.

The peculiar scent is being added to more traditional options such as strawberry, mint and cedarwood after the brand asked the public for their favourite scents that don’t usually make it into standard ranges.

In a clear indication of why you shouldn’t base business decisions on social media polls, the company gathered suggestions then ran an online survey to find the nation’s favourite unusual smell.

The heady reek of 95 RON came out on top, with 45 per cent of participants voting for petrol, ahead of the more run-of-the-mill orange blossom (26 per cent) and prosecco (21 per cent). Cow manure (six per cent) and the packing from green Andrex toilet roll completed the top five, proving that you should never ask the British public for their opinion.

Richard Fewings, managing director at Cosy Owl, commented on the findings: “When deciding our 2020 product range, we wanted to get the opinion of the public on which scents they would most like to see introduced. We were looking for quirky fragrances to add into our range, and as petrol was voted as the most desirable scent this will now be added to our range as a new fragrance oil. You don’t just have to be a petrolhead to be a fan of this unusual scent.”

While it has the familiar fuel-tank fragrance, the product’s maker insists the oil is perfectly safe to use around the home. It is not as flammable as actual petrol and acts like any other fragrance oil.

And however weird it might seem to make your house smell like a filling station, it’s nothing compared to Gwyneth Paltrow’s latest wheeze.
